Critical Illness

A big cheque if you get sick, or all your money back if you stay healthy.

Either way – you get paid.

Why Choose Critical Illness Coverage?

Insurance For Life believes in being prepared for life’s unexpected turns. Critical illness insurance provides a financial safety net if you’re diagnosed with a serious condition like cancer, heart attack, or stroke. It offers a tax-free lump sum payment you can use however you need—whether it’s covering treatment costs, replacing lost income, or simply giving you time to recover without financial stress. Life is unpredictable—your protection shouldn’t be.

How does critical illness insurance work?

Critical illness insurance pays a lump-sum benefit that you can use any way you wish when you are diagnosed with a covered critical illness and satisfy the survival period, as defined in the policy.

In addition, our critical illness insurance provides a range of additional benefits and assistance services to help you and your family find the best medical care, meet every day needs, and cope with the stresses of critical illness.

Why do I need critical illness insurance?

2 out of 5 of us are expected to develop cancer in our lifetime. Every four minutes a Canadian is diagnosed with cancer. More than 400,000 Canadians are living with long-term disability.

If I get sick, doesn't the government health plan pay for my medical expenses?

The government will cover some of your medical expenses – but may not cover all of them. Covered medical costs vary from province to province.

In Ontario, take-home cancer drugs (THCDs), such as oral chemotherapy, are not universally covered by the provincial health plan. Patients often rely on private insurance or pay out-of-pocket. For example, Kirsten Watson, a breast cancer patient, faced a monthly cost of $7,000 for her medication after losing her job and associated benefits. She narrowly avoided losing access to this life-saving treatment by securing new employment with health coverage and assistance from a manufacturer’s patient support program.

A 2022 report by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) estimated that Ontario patients are accessing take-home cancer drugs far less than those in provinces where the cost is covered by public health insurance. The CCS and CanCertainty Coalition have called on the Ontario government to fill this funding gap, which is currently borne by third parties, including drug manufacturer patient support programs and/or patients paying out of pocket.

Beyond medication costs, cancer patients often face additional expenses such as travel, accommodation, and lost income. A 2024 CCS report found that the average Canadian cancer patient incurs nearly $33,000 in costs over their lifetime, including out-of-pocket expenses and lost income during treatment and recovery . In 2024 alone, patients and caregivers were projected to cover $7.5 billion in cancer-related costs, with out-of-pocket expenses accounting for 49% of this total.

Testimonial: Susan Mast

It was last October when I decided that it would be a good idea to protect my pay and acquire disability insurance to cover my greatest asset, my income. After searching the internet, I found Insurance For Life on the web and quickly realized that I was at the right website.

I was referred to Andrew Burdi, Insurance For Life’s living benefit expert, who took the time to explain how I could protect my retirement from life’s uncertainties, such as cancer, heart attacks or simply being too hurt or sick to work.

We set a meeting and Andrew came to my house and we went through evaluating my needs in the event of a critical illness and or disability. We applied for coverage and I was approved.

Ninety days had passed since Andrew delivered my critical illness policy and it was time for my annual physical. Unfortunately, testing concluded that I had advanced colon cancer. Within 5 days of being diagnosed, I had to go for surgery.

Fortunately I took Andrew’s recommendation. Andrew asked me if I was comfortable with the idea to have him come to the hospital to complete the claim forms to get things moving. I signed off to have Andrew assist me with the claim and he was instrumental in doing just that, gathering information then calling all the specialists involved.

Today I am fortunate enough to have a $100,000 tax free cheque delivered to me by Andrew Burdi from Insurance For Life to simply allow me to focus on getting better which give me the financial freedom to focus on my recovery which is now my first priority.

Four months ago I knew nothing about critical illness coverage until I met with Insurance for life. Thanks to Andrew and Insurance For Life today I received a cheque for $100,000.

Thank you again for all your support and your willingness to assist with the claim personally.

Warm regards,
Susan Mast
